Course Description
Lecture Summary:
Mental health and substance use concerns are increasingly evident among our patients, staff, families, and in the media. As healthcare providers, we are familiar with the diagnostic criteria for various conditions, but the ways in which these issues manifest can differ greatly from person to person. By recognizing how stress, trauma, and repetitive behaviors present in our environments, we can better support patients with immediate verbal and sensory coping strategies. Patient-centered care begins with attending to ourselves, our employees, and our physical space before the patient arrives. When we approach our surroundings, décor, personal interactions, and acknowledge understandable anxious responses, by using a trauma-informed lens, we create a dental space that is not only supportive but potentially less activating for all who enter.
Learning Objectives:
Attendees will recognize the signs, symptoms and risk factors associated with adult and pediatric anxiety, depression, trauma, substance use and other compulsive behaviors.
